Fuerteventura food: what to eat, vegan and gluten-free

Majorero cheese, gofio, fresh fish, and the Spanish phrases that get you a vegan or gluten-free plate, from the DOP council and the coeliac federation.

Your bus, at a glance

Fuerteventura's table starts with its goat. Queso Majorero, made from whole Majorero goat's milk, was the first cheese in the Canary Islands with a designation of origin and the first protected goat's cheese in Spain, and the DOP council's rule is simple: the words Denominación de Origen Queso Majorero must be on the label. Gofio, flour from toasted grain, was the island's mainstay against hunger for centuries, and the fishing villages, Las Playitas and La Lajita among them, serve the catch of the day. Vegetarians eat well on cheese, potatoes and mojo; vegans and coeliacs eat well too if they ask the right questions, which this page gives you in Spanish.

The practical part

The essentials

  1. Queso Majorero: what to look for

The DOP council describes a pressed cheese of whole Majorero goat's milk whose rind may be rubbed with oil, paprika (pimentón) or gofio, sold young, semi-cured (semicurado) or cured. Only cheese labelled Denominación de Origen Queso Majorero is the real thing. The Museo del Queso Majorero near Antigua tells the story from the goat to the cheese, with a shop; line 1 has its own stops there.

  2. Gofio: flour, mills and gluten

Gofio is flour ground from toasted grain; Visit Fuerteventura calls it the Canarian flour and the food that kept the island from hunger. At the Los Molinos centre in Tiscamanita a hand mill grinds maize as you walk in, and a windmill shows how the grain was milled. Gofio can be made from different grains, so a coeliac should ask what it is made of before eating it.

  3. Fish where the boats come in

Las Playitas keeps the feel of a fishing village and its restaurants serve the catch of the day; La Lajita's local food is listed as affordable, with fresh fish and traditional dishes. Both are on line 1 (Las Playitas also on line 12 from Gran Tarajal), and Gran Tarajal's promenade has restaurants serving local food.

  4. Gluten-free: who to trust

FACE, the Spanish coeliac federation, verifies how gluten-free dishes are prepared in the restaurants its scheme advises, and lists them in its app CELIGUIA (formerly FACEMOVIL). The app is for members of FACE's associations, but FACE says a visitor to Spain can ask for temporary access by writing to [email protected]; do it before you fly. ASOCECA, its Canarian member, trains kitchen staff and visits kitchens to find cross-contact risks before a venue joins the network. A place on those lists has been checked; a “sin gluten” line on a menu has not.

Vegetarian and vegan: what is naturally safe and what to ask

Cheese, papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) with mojo, salads and gofio dishes are the vegetarian core. For a vegan plate ask “¿lleva carne, pescado, huevo o lácteos?” (does it have meat, fish, egg or dairy?): a mojo is usually oil, garlic, pepper and vinegar, but a potaje or a stew may be made on meat stock, and gofio is often served with milk or cheese. “Soy vegano / vegana” is understood; “sin productos animales” is clearer. Two venues near a bus stop, in their own words, are below.

Gluten-free: the phrases

“Soy celíaco” (man) or “soy celíaca” (woman) says you are coeliac; “sin gluten” means gluten-free; “¿tiene trigo, cebada o centeno?” asks about wheat, barley or rye; “¿está rebozado o empanado?” asks whether the fish is battered or breaded. Grilled fish (a la plancha) and papas arrugadas are the naturally gluten-free core. Majorero cheese needs a question: the DOP council allows the rind to be rubbed with oil, paprika or gofio, a toasted-cereal flour, so ask for one rubbed with oil or paprika, check the label and use FACE's certified list; ask about gofio, batter and sauces too. Then the cross-contact questions FACE's own guidance points to: is the cheese cut with a clean knife on a clean board, or on the one used for bread; is the fish fried in the same oil as battered food (FACE says a fryer used for gluten contaminates everything after it); is the toast made in a shared toaster. “¿Lo cortan con un cuchillo y una tabla limpios?” and “¿Usan el mismo aceite?” are the two sentences to carry.

Markets and where the food comes from

Visit Fuerteventura's village pages name the craft shop beside Antigua's windmill museum, Tefía's La Alcogida ecomuseum with its bread ovens and mills, and the Majorero goat behind the cheese. The destination pages carry each place's bus facts; this page adds no market day it cannot source.

Vegan near the bus: two venues, in their own words

Secret Garden in Lajares, a stop on line 7, is a mixed kitchen, not a vegan one: its own page offers Asian-inspired bowls and woks, “vibrant plant-based dishes” and fresh seafood, and lists “Vegan & Vegetarian options”. Ask which dishes are fully plant-based and whether they share a wok, a fryer or a sauce with the seafood. Baobab in Corralejo, on lines 6 and 8, calls itself the town's only fully vegan restaurant; its page gives lunch on some days and dinner on others, and closed on Sundays and Mondays, so read it for your day. Neither page claims a gluten-free kitchen.

Coeliac: the cross-contact questions to ask

A gluten-free recipe is not a coeliac-safe plate. FACE names where cross-contact happens: the same spoon in two pots, frying in oil that has fried breaded food, a shared toaster or sandwich grill, a bread board. So ask: “¿Freís lo sin gluten en aceite aparte?” (separate frying oil?), “¿La tostadora y la plancha son solo para sin gluten?” (toaster and griddle used only for gluten-free?), “¿Cortáis el pan sin gluten en otra tabla?” (another board for gluten-free bread?). A hesitant answer is an answer. This site lists no restaurant as coeliac-safe: that word belongs to FACE's and ASOCECA's scheme, and CELIGUIA is where to look.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask

What is Fuerteventura's typical food?

Majorero goat's cheese with its protected designation of origin, gofio from toasted grain, papas arrugadas with mojo, and fresh fish in the fishing villages. The cheese museum near Antigua and the mills centre in Tiscamanita, both on line 1, explain the first two.

Is Fuerteventura good for vegans?

Resort towns have the widest choice; in villages the safe vegan core is salad, papas arrugadas with mojo and bread, and the question that matters is whether a stew was made on meat stock. Ask “¿lleva carne, pescado, huevo o lácteos?” and you will usually get a straight answer.

Checked Visit Fuerteventura: Los Molinos Visitors’ Centre, Tiscamanita

Can coeliacs eat safely on Fuerteventura?

Yes, with the coeliac federation's tools: FACE's gluten-free restaurant scheme and app, and the Canarian association ASOCECA's gluten-free restaurant project. Grilled fish and papas arrugadas are naturally gluten-free. Majorero cheese is not a blanket yes: the DOP council permits a rind rubbed with gofio, a toasted-cereal flour, as well as oil or paprika, so ask which rind it has and check the label; ask about gofio, batter and sauces too.

Is Secret Garden in Lajares fully vegan?

No. Its own page advertises vegan and vegetarian options beside fresh seafood, so it is a mixed restaurant with plant-based dishes. Ask which dishes are vegan as served and how they are cooked; for a kitchen with no animal products at all, Baobab in Corralejo describes itself as fully vegan. Opening days and the menu on the day are on each venue's page, not here.

How do I find coeliac-safe restaurants in Corralejo?

Use FACE's CELIGUIA app, which lists the restaurants its gluten-free scheme advises and verifies; as a visitor you can request temporary access at [email protected] before you travel. This site names no Corralejo restaurant as coeliac-safe, because a gluten-free menu does not show how the kitchen avoids cross-contact. At the table, ask about separate frying oil, the toaster and griddle, and the bread board.

The other half of the plan

And the way back.

A long lunch in a fishing village is the best reason to check the bus back before you sit down: Las Playitas and La Lajita have few trips, and the last line 1 or line 12 of the day is a fact on the timetable tab, not a feeling after dessert.
